Phil Jackson
Phil Jackson, who guided the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships in his nine
years as head coach, returned to the basketball after a one-year sabbatical and
led the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2000 NBA title in his first season as their
coach.
Going into the 2000-01 season, Jackson owns a career coaching record of 612-208,
his .746 winning percentage being by far the best in NBA annals. He has a career
playoff record of 126-49, his winning percentage of .720 also heading the list.
In terms of most victories, Jackson ranks 16th in the regular season but second
in the playoffs.
Jackson was named the head coach of the Lakers on June 16, 1999. Prior to his
arrival, the Lakers were a team loaded with talent but one that couldn't get
past the second round of the playoffs. Jackson stepped up the emphasis on
defense, and the Lakers responded by winning an NBA-best 67 games in the regular
season and more importantly going all the way in the playoffs.
